For those that like to teach their children using unit studies, Cadron Creek has a number of choices depending on what type of books you would like to use. These core literature based study units cover Bible, Reading/Writing, with a smattering of science, history and geography.
Our family was fortunate enough to receive the Further Up and Further In study, for use with The Chronicles of Narnia.
Covering all seven of the books, we chose to start chronologically and use The Magician's Nephew first.
Even though Genius has read the book before, we found the study guide enhanced the re-reading of it. Along with Bible assignments, the creation of a new world, took on a different light when pairing it with Scripture.
The analysis of the characters is strong in this study, with writing assignments that encourage the student to show how they act and feel in different parts of the book.
There are additional books that need to be used with this study, including other works that C.S. Lewis has written. Those were easy to find for us without purchasing, as our church library had them.
We chose to not do every activity the guide has to offer, but rather we only picked a few out of each chapter. That still has given us plenty to do each day.
There isn't much depth when it comes to the history/geography or science portions of the study, so in addition to having to include math and grammar, don't expect that you will get a full curriculum out of this product. We have been happily and successfully using it as a literature study in our language arts, only adding spelling and grammar to it for that subject.
The other nice thing about it, is it is adaptable for different age levels. There are easier things for the younger set to do, while the older students can do more reading in other books or extra research on various topics.
We have very much enjoyed going through The Magician's Nephew with Further Up and Further In, and are looking forward to using it for the rest of the series as well.
So if your children enjoy fantasy books and a literature study on The Narnia ones would be a good match for your family, I encourage you to check out Cadron Creek's website. The paperback copy guide for all seven books is $56.00, $62.00 for a spiral bound copy. You can also see a preview of some of the chapters and activities the guide has to offer.
TOS Crew members had a choice of this study, an Anne of Green Gables study (Where the Brook and the River Meet) as well as a Little House study (Prairie Primer). If you would like to see more reviews on any of these, you can visit the TOS Crew blog website.
