Insightful Book on College Admission

Sunday, September 20, 2009 19 comments

If you have no idea how colleges choose students for admission A is for Admission is an eye opener. While the book exclusively talks about Ivy League and highly selective colleges, so much can be taken out of it regardless of the higher institution you or your children have their sights on. Certainly not "light" reading, but hugely insightful.

It is written by Michele A. Hernandez, EdD, a former Assistant Director of Admissions at Dartmouth College.

Who knew that much of what the Ivies use the student has no control over(ranking systems, weighted grades, class size etc.). With the information in this book though, a student who has the ambition to attend an Ivy League or highly selective college, can be better prepared with their application and the information they do have control over.

Clorox College Survival Guide 2009 - Tips & Advice

Wednesday, September 2, 2009 0 comments

The Clorox College Survival Guide 2009 is a .pdf featuring advice compiled from current college students and of course their moms ♥. The up and coming freshmen can check this out to find out what to pack for the dorm room, the latest fashions they'll see on campus, and of course what mom has to say. (Somehow if it comes from "someone" else's mom it's worth listening to right?)

It includes useful advice like: The School Part of going to "School", How To Do a 5 Minute Dorm Room Clean-Up, and the Correct Way to Cover Your Cough (so you don't get your room mate sick!) This guide is worth printing off and tacking to the cork board, both while getting ready for and at college.

A National Version of the guide is available at
Mom Central, and Regional Versions can be found on the Clorox Survival Guide's Facebook Fan Page, on the left hand side. I've become a fan of the page, because the information is useful even if you don't have a child going off to college.

To give you a better idea of what the College Survival Guide 2009 is about, here's a video introduction from one of the contributors.

"I wrote this review while participating in a blog tour campaign by Mom Central on behalf of The Clorox Company and received a gift certificate to thank me for taking the time to participate."
